In calligraphy we speak of styles, hands or scripts. We don’t tend to call them “fonts.” Fonts is generally reserved for typography.
Popular calligraphy scripts include:
- Italic calligraphy
- Gothic or blackletter calligraphy
- Uncial calligraphy
- Modern calligraphy
- Expressive, gestural or abstract calligraphy
- Asemic
- Experimental lettering
- Copperplate, Spensarian
Many classes focus on foundational scripts such as Italic calligraphy, which forms a strong basis for developing personal style. I like Italic as the starting point for Western calligraphy.
Beyond the traditional western calligraphy mentioned above, Chinese calligraphy (shūfǎ), Japanese calligraphy (shodō), and Arabic calligraphy (khatt) each represent rich, distinct artistic disciplines. These are well worth exploring and add richness and diversity into any calligraphy practice. Searching calligraphy styles or caligraphy fonts will show examples of each.
